FG Intensifies Efforts to End Certificate Fraud, Strengthen Nigeria’s Education System

The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to tackle certificate fraud and safeguard the credibility of Nigeria’s education system through the deployment of a new digital verification platform.

The initiative, known as the Nigeria Education Repository and Data Bank (NERD), is designed to strengthen the integrity of academic records across tertiary institutions in the country.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to the statement, the platform serves as a national digital infrastructure aimed at securing, digitising and authenticating academic records in Nigerian higher institutions.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the initiative during the National Capacity Building Programme organised for institutional representatives.

He described the NERD platform as a critical national infrastructure that would help protect academic credentials and strengthen education data governance across the country.

Alausa noted that the platform supports the reform agenda of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by ensuring reliable digital preservation and verification of academic records.

According to him, within four months of implementation, the system has already preserved nearly 100,000 digital student submissions. It has also integrated more than 250 tertiary institutions while enrolling over 133,000 students and 6,800 lecturers on the platform.

The minister explained that the initiative is also targeted at tackling certificate fraud, revealing that recent investigations uncovered cases involving fraudulent foreign credentials obtained from unaccredited institutions.

The ministry further disclosed that participation in the NERD platform would become a requirement for participation in, or exemption from, the National Youth Service Corps scheme.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to building a transparent and digitally verifiable education system that would be globally respected, the statement added.

Concerns rise over cross-border certificate rackets

The government’s renewed push against certificate fraud comes amid growing concerns over the activities of certificate rackets uncovered in recent years.

In 2024, investigative reports exposed a network of unaccredited universities and degree mills operating in neighbouring countries such as Benin and Togo.

The investigations revealed that some individuals were able to obtain degree certificates from certain institutions within a few weeks or months without attending lectures or completing the required academic programmes.

The revelations sparked widespread concern within Nigeria’s education sector and raised questions about the verification of foreign qualifications presented for employment and public service appointments.

Following the reports, the Federal Ministry of Education announced a temporary suspension on the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from some institutions in the affected countries while a comprehensive review was carried out.

Education authorities also warned that such fraudulent practices undermine the credibility of genuine academic qualifications and weaken trust in Nigeria’s education system.

Experts say the introduction of the NERD digital platform could help address these challenges by creating a centralised and secure database for academic records across tertiary institutions.

With digital verification, employers, government agencies and education regulators would be able to confirm the authenticity of certificates more easily, thereby reducing the chances of forged or questionable credentials entering the system.

Stakeholders believe that if fully implemented and adopted by institutions nationwide, the platform could mark a significant step toward restoring confidence in Nigeria’s academic credentials and strengthening transparency within the country’s education sector.
