Abia Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh Joins Labour Party
The member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, has officially defected to the Labour Party.
Ikwechegh was received on Tuesday by the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti.
The defection comes days after the federal lawmaker resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), a move that followed the resignation of over 90 party executives across Aba North and Aba South.
In a letter dated 28 February 2026 and addressed to his ward chairman, the federal lawmaker announced his immediate withdrawal from the party.
In the letter, Ikwechegh expressed gratitude to APGA for the opportunity to serve and contribute during his time in the party, while wishing the organisation continued progress in its future activities.
Among the notable party executives who resigned are Hon. Edwin Ehuchie (Bongos), Youth Leader, Aba North LGA; Mr Michael Ada, Woman Leader, Aba South; Mrs Juliana Duruaku, Woman Leader, Aba North; Magnus Onyenaucheya, Vice Chairman, Ariaria Ward 9.
Others include: Mercy Onyeahala, Woman Leader, Ariaria Ward 9; Hon. Deacon Emeka Okozie, Deputy Chairman, Aba North LGA; Mr Chigozie Alozie, Youth Leader, Ward 12, Aba North; Mr Ibe Osuagwu, Chairman, Ariaria Ward 9; Hon. Victor Urum, Aba North LGA Chairman; and Chisom Amah, Chairman, Eziama Ward 1, Aba North.
