The Blues were beaten on penalties in the Carabao Cup fourth round after Timo Werner’s first Chelsea goal was cancelled out late on by Erik Lamela.

Sunny Idika,  Publisher of thewhisperer.ng  rates  individual performance of Chelsea fc players against Spurs.

Edouard Mendy

First appearance for Chelsea with towering presence in posts.

Confident claiming crosses and high balls into his box, as well, which is another huge plus for the Blues.

Made a very good save to deny Eric Lamela in the first half and Sergio Reguilon early in the second half, could do nothing about the Erik Lamela goal.

Verdict: Commanding display of a Chelsea player.
Rating: 8

Cesar Azpilicueta

The Chelsea captain had a mixed game. Fantastic for the opening goal with a neat turn and picking out Werner for the finish. Really impressive in the first half and had Reguilon in his pocket.

Didn’t get forward at all in the second half and was pushed right back. Dealt with most things, but not good enough on the ball. Allowed the cross from Requilon far too easily.

Verdict: Age is beginning to take the best part of his game.
Rating: 5.5

Fikayo Tomori

Spurs barely threatened in the first half, but Tomori was solid when he was called into action. A couple of shaky moments with the defence, however, but not too troubled in the end.

Not a great moment to start the second half, almost giving the ball away for a Spurs chance.

Verdict: Still far from a Chelsea player.
Rating: 5

Kurt Zouma

He was similar to Tomori and made one important challenge to deny Gedson Fernandes when he was through.

Looked more shaky at the start of the second half. Spurs started to put pressure on the Chelsea defence and some mistakes started to creep in.

Verdict: Raw talent; should improve on his confidence.
Rating: 6.

Ben Chilwell

He was willing to impress the fans on his first start for Chelsea and more solid in the first half rather than really getting down the left flank. Kept his position well and was neat and tidy in possession.

Looked rusty in the second half, which is understandable with his long-term heel injury. Almost gave away a penalty with a slightly clumsy challenge. Valuable minutes for him, however.

Verdict: Better than Alonso and Emerson.
Rating: 6

Jorginho

Willing to keep possession with no real cutting edge forward. Lacks creativity and hunger for goals which has affected Chelsea matches.

He lost the midfield completely in the second half when Spurs pushed well and Chelsea not having the control of possession. Completely outworked in the second half.

Verdict: Not in the class of Essien, Ballack, Makelele and Deco.
Rating: 5.

Mateo Kovacic

Often times, one wonders what really does on the pitch. However, against Spurs, he drove the ball well with his regular side passes, but there was a real lack of penetration and creativity from the midfielder.

In the second half he couldn’t get hold of the ball at all and it was a frustrating time not to hammer home the advantage.

Verdict: He should improve on his creativity and hunger for goals.
Rating: 5.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Looked really bright and constantly looking to get at his man. Tracked back well, also, and was a spark for the Blues. Gave Reguilon a tough time.

Struggled to get into the game in the second half due to lack of creativity in the middle. Didn’t see as much of the ball and tried to move forward when he did. But nowhere near as effective and missed a big chance to kill the game.

Verdict: Should be more major with the way he plays.
Rating: 6

Mason Mount

With Spurs sitting so deep it was hard for Mount to really find the space to work with. One shot in the first half which was dragged well wide of the goal.

He struggled in the second half as well. Had a couple of moments where he could have broken through and played in Timo Werner, but failed to find his man.

Verdict: Passionate about the badge. Rating: 4

Timo Werner

Finally got himself off the mark with a wonderful finish into the bottom corner. Played off the left in the first half and looked to get at his man.

A lot more quiet in the second half with Spurs pushing Chelsea back. Found a bit of space at times, but never really got into the game as much.

Verdict: Willing to play and impress. Rating: 7

Olivier Giroud

A quiet first half as he didn’t really have the service in to him and the ball didn’t really stick. No chance of note for him to get on to in the opening 45 minutes.

It was much the same in the second half. Spurs were much the better team in the second half and had nothing to work with.

Verdict: Age not on his side. Rating: 5.5

Substitutes

Emerson Palmieri (on or Chilwell 66′)

Completely out of position for the Lamela goal and that really cost the Blues.

Verdict: Not a Chelsea player in all ramifications. Rating: 3.

N’Golo Kante (on for Kovacic 72′)

Class and elegance. Some nice touches and moved the ball pretty well. Could have done more for the Spurs goal.

Verdict: The only world class player in the team last night. Always playing with passion and hunger. Rating: 8.

Tammy Abraham (on for Giroud 76′)

Not in the game at all.

Verdict: Championship player. Rating: 3.
