Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has zoned the position of the national chairman of the party to the north. The Chairman of the party’s Zoning Committee and Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, made the announcement on Thursday after the meeting of the committee in Enugu. Mr Ugwuanyi said other positions within the National Working Committee (NWC) will be swapped between the north and the south. The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Obiora Agbasimelo, has been declared missing. The candidate’s disappearance has fuelled speculations that he has been kidnapped. The emergence of Agbasimelo as LP’s governorship candidate in the November 6 governorship election in Anambra followed the crisis in the party. The crisis threw up a faction in the LP while one of the leading aspirants at the beginning of the governorship race, Nnamdi Nnoruka, was allegedly kidnapped by unknown persons and forced to withdraw from the contest. The state police command has not issued an official statement on the matter.

The member Representing Onitsha North/ South Federal House of Representative, Hon. Lynda Chuba Ikpeazu has dumped the People's Democratic Party (PDP)  for All Progressives Congress (APC). She defected to the APC alongside Hon. Chris Azubogu, member representing Nnewi federal constituency; Hon. Vincent Ofumelu, member representing Oyi/Ayamelum federal constituency; Hon. The Peoples Democratic Party may zone its national chairmanship position to the South-West. The recommendation to zone the position to the South-West was contained in a leaked working document prepared by the party’s 44-member National Convention Committee on Zoning. The committee recommended the position of secretary for the North in the document was sighted by our correspondent on Wednesday. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has rescheduled state congresses by two weeks. The exercise which was initially scheduled for October 2, 2021, has now been moved to October 16, 2021. The Northern Elders Forum has said that it regretted that it got rid of then President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 elections to vote in the incumbent, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). The group expressed disappointment that Buhari has let down millions of Nigerians including members of the All Progressives Congress who trusted in his leadership prior to the poll six years ago. Nigeria's northern region won't play second fiddle to any other region ahead of the 2023 presidential election, because the north has the numbers to produce a president, according to Director of Publicity and Advocacy of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.
