INEC Fixes January 16 for Presidential, N’Assembly Elections The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, 16th January 2027 for Presidential and National Assembly elections. The Commission had earlier fixed Saturday, 20th February 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections and Saturday, 6th March 2027 for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections pursuant to the Electoral Act, 2022. National Commissioner, Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna in a statement issued Thursday in Abuja said the governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections will now hold on Saturday, 6th February 2027. Peter Obi, Oyegun allegedly escapes assassination in Benin The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, and former National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, have been attacked in an alleged assassination attempt in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday. Bayelsa Gov Picks RCCG Pastor As Deputy Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has appointed a provincial pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor (Hon.) Peter Pereotubo Akpe, as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. This follows the death of the former Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who collapsed and died in his office on December 11, 2025. Ewhrudjakpo, was buried on January 30, 2026. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from office at the request of President Bola Tinubu. According to Premium Times, a source in the presidency said Mr Egbetokun was asked to resign at a meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday. Mr Egbetokun is to be replaced by Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Premium Times reported.
