The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday said it has not issued a fresh directive to commercial banks on last Friday’s judgement of the Supreme Court ordering the circulation of the old naira notes alongside the new ones until December 31. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented certificate of return to the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. The certificate was presented on Tuesday at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja. Kalu was declared the winner of the Abia North Senatorial election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after he defeated his closest rival, Mr. Nnamdi Iroh Orji of the Labour Party. The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure has dissolved the party’s State Executive Council in Rivers State for alleged anti-party activities and corruption in the management of party’s funds. Following the Supreme Court judgment, which extended the validity of the Central Bank of Nigeria currency redesign policy to December 31, some banks across the country have started paying out the old N500 and N1,000 notes to customers. The Supreme Court on Friday ordered that old N200, N500, N1,000 notes remain in circulation till December 31, 2023. The apex court also nullified the Federal Government’s naira redesign policy, declaring it as an affront to the 1999 Constitution. Justice Emmanuel Agim, who read the lead judgement, held that the preliminary objections by the defendants (the Attorney General of the Federation, Bayelsa and Edo states) are dismissed as the court has the jurisdiction to entertain the suit.
