President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the setting up of a Health Sector Reform Committee to commence the development and implementation of a programme for Nigeria in collaboration with the state governments and the FCT administration. President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Dr Ifedayo Morayo Adetifa as the new Director General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, announced the appointment of Adetifa on Monday. Adetifa will take over from Chikwe Ihekweazu, who has been given an appointment at the World Health Organisation (WHO). Ihekweazu was appointed an assistant Director-General of WHO. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has recorded 565 new COVD-19 infections and eight deaths. The NCDC disclosed this in a report on Tuesday via its website. The agency noted that this brings the total infections, since the index case in 2020, to 187, 588. The NCDC attributed the surge to the highly transmissible Delta variant and low vaccination rates across the country. The centre also said that eight COVID-19 related deaths were reported on Monday, bringing the total fatality figure to 2,276. The Bauchi State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Aliyu Maigoro, has confirmed the outbreak of cholera disease in the state. Addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Bauchi, Mr Maigor disclosed that no fewer than 20 persons have died of the disease.
