I miss the South East we used to know, by Femi Adesina

I miss the South East we used to know, by Femi Adesina

Each time I read of killings by gunmen in the South East, I go into the doldrums. I get mortified by the sheer waste of precious lives, the wantonness, malevolence and viciousness of it all. And I mean killings on both sides. The innocent law enforcement agents, mowed down in cold blood, and the misguided, brainwashed gunmen, who more often than not do not get away with their evil acts. MAD. Mutual Assured Destruction. That’s what usually happens. I then tell myself. This is not the South East we used to know. What happened? How did grace turn to disgrace?…

PDP Crisis: Addressing 10 Fallacies From Wike’s Media Chat, By Reno Omokri

The Governor of Rivers state, and an esteemed member of our party, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike addressed the press on current issues within our party, and in the encounter he made some utterances which are fallacious. I believe he did not lie. It may just be a case that, because of the task of running a very successful state, like Rivers, his memory may have failed him. So I have written the below to refresh his memory. 1. The Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, never promised to resign if a Northern Presidential candidate is elected. Rather, he said…

OPINION: Misrecognition and the Moral Burden of the APC and PDP Presidential Candidates for 2023 By Unico Uduka

OPINION: Misrecognition and the Moral Burden of the APC and PDP Presidential Candidates for 2023 By Unico Uduka

All political parties have chosen presidential candidates and running mates for the 2023 elections, but the choices made by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC) have raised concerns about moral justice in a multi-ethnic and religious society like Nigeria. Despite the crude manner in which many tribes were brought together to form a nation, with little or no regard for their common qualities or distinctive characteristics, countless nation-building attempts have been made to ensure a more cohesive, unified, and stronger Nigeria. One policy attempt at fostering this cohesion is the Federal Character Principle, which attempts…

What tangible development values have Ikpeazu’s friendship with Wike brought to Ndi Abia? By Onoh Chukwuma Richard

What tangible development values have Ikpeazu’s friendship with Wike brought to Ndi Abia? By Onoh Chukwuma Richard

Friendship is a mutually benefitting process. It is best described with the popular saying ‘iron sharpen iron’, friends share goodwill and challenges. one’s success in a mutually friendship setting must also rob on another. In this light, it’s expected that the relationship between the Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu (Ph.D.) with his Rivers State counterpart, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike translates to sharing and implementing ideas on social infrastructure and human development for the benefit of citizens of both states. Ikpeazu has publicly followed Wike expending time and resources and both are adjudged good friends, even if on simple political…

Those Who Are Seriously Contesting To Take Over From Ikpeazu Are Already Known – Odo Ijere

As the clock of May 29th, 2023 ticks, it is time to put on our analytic caps, pick up our kaleidoscope, redoubt our thinking membrane and gaze dispassionately into what future awaits us Abians as a people. I'm writing this piece to help settle the dust kicked by my last article which got many asking why I stepped out to eulogyze the person of High Chief Ikechi Emenike. I have been asked what happened to the MBEN agenda, Ohafia ejikerele mantra, Udumaeze political renaissance, Abia North charter, Abia equity charter and what have you. The truth is that these potpourri…

OPINION: RE-UNVEILING BARR. OLUGU KALU UGBA: THE ISHI BU MBA WE KNOW, BY PRINCE UDENSI

On the 1st of June, 2021 when "unknown "arsonists" as the vanguard newspaper described them razzed down the Amangwu, Ohafia country home of the Ohafia born legal practisioner and current deputy Chief of Staff, political analyst and social commentators turned their attention to the usually serene community and struggled albeit in vain to give a comprehensive overview of the man in the middle of the storm. While some described Barr. Olugu as an extablished man with exquisite taste, others described him as a party loyalist and veteran politician who was working with the state government to see to the extermination…

OPINION: Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu And His Ethic Community Town Hall Meetings, By  Bernard Ogbe

By Bernard Ogbe From Abuja Leveraging on the huge responsibilities vested on Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, his response, measured by his achievements as a Senator representing Abia North District, distinguishes him from other senators. He can be described as a dutifully diligent leader in his approaches to the daring needs of the people he represents. Orji Uzor Kalu is once again ramping up his Community Town Hall Meetings with his people back in his constituency to access the collective notions of the people, on the mandate given to him and to also gather more complaints and ways forward in improving…

Are States, LGAs Now Above The Law?

Are States, LGAs Now Above The Law?

We are living in interesting times in Nigeria. Issues of public discourse never cease to amaze one in this country. When you think that you have seen and heard it all, something risible would just pop up like a bolt out of the blues to add to the dramatic turn of events that are unfolding all around us. The Body of Attorneys-General of the 36 States of the Federation (BOAG), rising from its Conference which was held in Lagos State recently, issued a communique in which it erroneously claimed that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) "lacks the power to…

WHY WE’RE UNIQUELY CLASSIC

WHY WE’RE UNIQUELY CLASSIC

Edmund Burke, the 18th Century British Political writer and statesman said, " The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that, good men do nothing". This is one of the driving forces behind Nigerian Association of Christian Journalists (NACJ), The Holy Bible says, " Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people". The sin of corruption is fast driving this country into chaos deeper and deeper by the day. We can't fold our hands and do nothing. NACJ is determined to redirect the course of the history of this country. We believe that honesty…

Last Southern Elders Standing, By Ochereome Nnanna

Last Southern Elders Standing, By Ochereome Nnanna

TODAY, I celebrate two giants among men: Chief Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-cultural and political group; and Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, Ijaw leader and President of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF. These are four of our oldest surviving founding fathers who share certain characteristics. They are nonagenarians, and I list them in their ages’ descending order: Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, 97; Chief Mbazulike Amechi, 96; Chief Clark, 95 and Chief Adebanjo, 94. In spite of their ages, these living ancestors are very eloquent, blessed white photographic memories and are strong regional leaders and advocates. They are still…
