2027: LP National Chair Abure Meets Mayor Igbokwe In Abuja, Sparks Defection Rumours

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barr. Julius Abure, on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with renowned media entrepreneur and 2023 Abia PDP governorship aspirant, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe (popularly known as Don Lulu), in Abuja.

Also present at the meeting were the Labour Party’s Vice Chairman for the Southeast, Chief Ceekay Igara, and former member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Kelechi Onwuzuruike. The high-level meeting has sparked strong speculations about a possible political alignment ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Abia State.

Mayor Igbokwe, who came second in the 2023 PDP governorship primaries in Abia, has remained a prominent figure in the state’s political and development space. His meeting with the top hierarchy of the Labour Party is being interpreted by observers as a potential move to switch political allegiance.

Political analysts suggest that the Labour Party, which gained momentum in the 2023 general elections, may be positioning itself early by engaging influential politicians like Igbokwe who command grassroots support and youth appeal.

The meeting comes at a time when the Labour Party is grappling with an internal leadership crisis. National Chairman Julius Abure has been engaged in a bitter face-off with Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who was elected under the Labour Party but has since distanced himself from Abure’s leadership. The rift, marked by accusations and counter-accusations, has polarized the party, with Abure alleging that Otti—alongside Peter Obi—has been fueling division within the ranks.

While no official statement has been issued by any of the attendees, the visit is seen as a strategic move by the Abure-led leadership to solidify the party’s presence in Abia and potentially position Don Lulu as a strong contender in the 2027 governorship race.
