The lawmaker representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Ibe Okwara Osonwa, over the weekend in Abuja met with top federal civil servants, heads, and former heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) from the federal constituency. The meeting was convened to brief them on his legislative scorecard since he assumed office in June 2023.

In his address, Osonwa stated that the purpose of the meeting was “to extend brotherhood to everybody” and build synergy for the overall development of Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency.

“The office is not mine; it is your office, and I am just sitting on it. It is time for us to know ourselves and extend brotherhood to everybody for the benefit of our communities,” he emphasised.

He outlined some of his achievements in office, which include the attraction of rural road projects, renovation of schools, installation of solar-powered streetlights, and training and empowerment of youth and women in agriculture and other businesses with startup grants. He noted that while 200 people have been trained, his target is to reach 5,000 beneficiaries.

Our correspondent reports that Osonwa’s other legislative achievements include sponsoring and co-sponsoring several bills, such as the Upgrading of Ohafia General Hospital to a Federal Medical Centre, the Freight Forwarding Bill, the State Policing Bill (which has passed its second reading), and the South-East Development Commission Bill, now signed into law. He also sponsored a Bill to Amend Nigeria’s Constitution to Transition from a Presidential to a Parliamentary System of Government.

In addition to his legislative work, Osonwa has addressed pressing issues affecting Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency through various motions. These include advocating for urgent erosion control measures, pushing for peacekeeping initiatives in conflict-prone areas of his constituency, and fighting for the restoration of electricity in the federal constituency.

In response, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, a former federal lawmaker and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Film Corporation, praised Hon. Osonwa for initiating the meeting. He urged the lawmaker to “leverage some key programs of the Tinubu-led government to drive development to the federal constituency.”

The bipartisan meeting, which focused on the development of the constituency, was attended by several prominent personalities, including Chief Umeh Kalu, SAN; Dr. Chidia Maduekwe; Dr. Michael Kalu Mba; Dr. Nkeiruka Chidia Maduekwe; Dr. Kalu N.
