2027: Ahead of General Elections, INEC Lists Lagos, Kano, Kaduna as States With Most Registered Voters
Lagos, Kano and Kaduna states have emerged as the three states with the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election, according to figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figures in Abuja on Tuesday while giving an update on the country’s voter register, TheCable reported.
According to Amupitan, Nigeria’s national register of voters now stands at over 103 million, following the three phases of the commission’s voter registration exercise.
He said Lagos remains the state with the highest number of registered voters, with 7,488,633, followed by Kano with 6,570,276 and Kaduna with 4,662,640.
Katsina occupies the fourth position with 3,876,051 registered voters, while Rivers follows with 3,736,434.
Oyo has 3,588,111 registered voters, Delta has 3,525,988, Benue has 3,057,225, Ogun has 3,037,981, while Bauchi completes the top 10 with 3,012,547 registered voters.
“The top 10 states by number of registered voters are Lagos State in first position with 7,488,633 registered voters, followed by Kano State with 6,570,276. Next is Kaduna State with 4,662,640 voters. Next is Katsina State with 3,876,051,” Amupitan said.
“Rivers State is next with 3,736,434. Oyo State is 3,588,111. Delta State 3,525,988.
“Benue State 3,057,225. Ogun State 3,037,981. And then the 10th is Bauchi State, with 3,012,547.”
At the other end of the table, Ekiti recorded the lowest number of registered voters, with 1,055,708, followed by Bayelsa with 1,200,691.
The Federal Capital Territory has 1,732,043 registered voters, while Yobe has 1,733,641 and Gombe has 1,768,566.
“At the other end of the table, we have Ekiti State with registered voters of 1,055,708. It is followed by Bayelsa State with 1,200,691 registered voters,” the INEC chairman said.
“The FCT ranks next from the bottom with 1,732,043 voters, followed by Yobe State with 1,733,641 and Gombe with 1,768,566.”
Amupitan also provided a breakdown of the register by gender, age and disability.
According to him, male voters account for 53,528,218, representing 51.75 per cent of registered voters, while female voters number 49,900,497.
The age distribution shows that voters between 35 and 49 years constitute the largest group, numbering 43,265,946, or 41.83 per cent of the register.
They are followed by voters aged 18 to 34, who number 29,777,576 and account for 28.79 per cent.
Voters between the ages of 50 and 69 number 22,982,900, representing 22.22 per cent, while those aged 70 and above constitute the smallest age group, with 7,402,291 voters, or 7.16 per cent.
The INEC chairman added that the register contains 232,658 persons with disabilities across 10 disability categories, representing approximately 0.2 per cent of registered voters.
