Drama As Security Operatives Storm Abia PDP Meeting Over Alleged Unapproved Gathering
There was palpable drama in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State on Friday, as a meeting organised by members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was suddenly interrupted and forced to relocate following the unexpected arrival of security operatives.
The meeting, initially held at a community square, was disrupted when personnel from Operation Crush — a combined security task force in Abia State — stormed the venue. Although the operatives did not make any arrests or physically confront the attendees, their silent and strategic presence created confusion, prompting attendees to disperse in different directions before reconvening at a private location to continue the gathering.
Sources revealed that the PDP meeting was connected to a recent solidarity visit to former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu by his former appointees. The event was said to be part of efforts to mobilise party loyalists in the area.
A senior official of the Obingwa LGA, who preferred not to be named, stated that the PDP failed to obtain the required approval to hold the meeting in a public space. He described the gathering as a potential security threat and cited an existing regulation from the immediate past administration which bars political meetings in public areas without prior government consent.
However, the PDP chairman in Obingwa, Mr Aham Egbulefu, countered the claim, insisting that the party had secured approval for the meeting. He condemned the disruption, describing it as an infringement on the party’s right to peaceful assembly.
Reacting to the incident, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alex Otti, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, criticised the motive behind the meeting, claiming that the organisers “did not mean well for Abia State” and were merely engaged in “content creating auditioning.”
