The Nigerian community in the United Kingdom has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support the repatriation and burial of Ifeanyi Obi, a 34-year-old Nigerian man who was found dead in his apartment in Birmingham on Thursday, 14 November 2024.
The campaign, launched by members of the Nigerians in Diaspora community, aims to cover the costs of transporting Obi’s remains to his hometown of Ojoto in Anambra State, Nigeria. Funds raised will also contribute to funeral arrangements to ensure his final rites are conducted in line with local traditions.
In a statement shared on their X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, the organisers described Ifeanyi Obi as a hardworking individual with great aspirations.
The statement reads:
“This dream was tragically cut short on Thursday, 14 November 2024, when he suddenly and sadly passed away in his apartment in Birmingham.
“We, his close friends, have set up this GoFundMe account to assist with the costs of repatriating his body to Nigeria and arranging the funeral in his hometown of Ojoto, Anambra State.
“Ifeanyi’s last wish was to return to Nigeria and be with his family. Although the circumstances are now different, we are committed to honouring his wish by giving him a befitting farewell and paying our final respects.”
The statement also highlighted Obi’s memorable personality, adding:
“Ifeanyi Obi will always be remembered for his humour, selflessness, generosity, and the profound impact he had on everyone who knew him.”
The Nigerian community in the UK is calling on well-wishers to contribute to the campaign to help fulfil Obi’s final wish and support his grieving family during this difficult time.
