Price of 50kg Bag of Rice Reduced To N38,700; 25kg To N19,350; 10kg To N7,740 — Gov Aliyu
Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Wednesday launched the sale of subsidised rice and other essential commodities at a 55 percent discount in Sokoto.
The launch, which took place in Kware Local Government Area, marked the beginning of the program across all 244 wards in the state.
Governor Aliyu explained that the initiative is aimed at alleviating the economic challenges faced by citizens and assured that the program would be sustained to promote food security in Sokoto.
“We have made the process transparent and non-political to ensure the success of this initiative in supporting the entire population of the state.
“Our objective is to make sure that all residents of Sokoto, regardless of political affiliation or religious background, benefit from this program,” he said.
The governor revealed that the state government had spent N14.4 billion to procure 280 truckloads of rice for sale to the public.
“Each ward will receive 600 bags of 50kg rice, sold at a 55 percent discount. We have reduced the price of a 50kg bag to N38,700, a 25kg bag to N19,350, and a 10kg bag to N7,740,” he stated.
Governor Aliyu further clarified that the government does not intend to collect the proceeds from these sales. Instead, a special account will be opened, and the funds will be used to purchase additional food items to ensure the sustainability of the program.
“I have also instructed the sales committee to provide smaller quantities for those who cannot afford the 10kg bags,” he added.
The governor encouraged religious leaders in the state to use their platforms to urge wealthy individuals to assist the less privileged in their communities.
He assured that measures had been put in place to ensure the commodities reach the intended beneficiaries.
Chiso Dattijo, chairman of the sales committee, reassured the governor that due process would be strictly adhered to during the sales.
