PRESS STATEMENT: Sponsors Of Inyali Peter And Committee Of Friends Must Stop Insulting UNICROSS

For the umpteen time we are compelled to once again correct some disturbing exhibition of arrogance aimed at placing all of us in bad light. We would have ignored but so our members and the public are not misinformed, hence this statement.

Our attention has been drawn to a misleading story circulating on social media credited to one Ojong Romeo Esq, who assumed a role unqualified for. In the said article, Ojong Romeo was quoted as having casted aspersions on the Governing council of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), erroneously alleging that “Governing Council Continues the Draining of Varsity Finances With a 2nd Sitting In Five Days”.

Members of the University of Cross River State Alumni Association led by Comrade Adugba Paul Agwu, unequivocally condemns the outburst from Ojong Romeo, his committee of friends and their sponsors. A quick look through all records of the Association across the Seven chapters show no such name exist as a registered member of any of them.

It is actually been verified and confirmed that the said Ojong is an alumnus of the University, however he is not a financial member of any Chapter or branch as clearly stated in the Crutech Alumni constitution of 2016, article 2, section 1, H & L that would have qualified him to serve either as her Counsel or the spokesperson.

These friends have become infamous for disrespecting the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu by tagging those working at his discretion and supporting the governor to move the state forward as “wasteful” and ”unproductive”.

It is on record that the larger than life posture of these fellows with warped orientation about how the system functions, with their sponsors are after the leadership and the entire Governing Council — for simply refusing to compromise on major issues that would undermine the government of His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu. Information has it that they continue to boast about having the ears of the visitor to the institution, who would oblige them any request made, no matter how unholy.

Their anger and campaign of calumny against the governing council is simply hinged on the basis that the council chairman and his team are resolute on doing the right things towards supporting the governor to deliver his programmes for the school and to succeed in office. The governing council is known to be mostly loyalists and supporters of the governor; and are people with impeccable leadership credentials and managerial skills with verifiable polling units as against those whose only assumed strength is on social media space. It is pertinent for their likes, sponsors and friends to stop distracting the governor with those unsavoury and maligning commentaries against his representatives.

The much talked about statement is an insult to the university integrity. It is a futile attempt of a frustrated and rejected group of impostors to assess the outstanding performance of Governor Otu, through the governing council of UNICROSS.

One can concede that it is within your right to seek, either as a person or group for public information through the FOIA, but that must not be carried out as impostors of the Unicross Alumni Association leadership.

It is ridiculous that these unknown group would have the temerity to give an assessment of a council that has already been rated the best in the history of the university, even by the appointing authorities in recent times.

Their statement on the number of times that the council has met is clearly an admission to the fact that the council is performing creditably, and should be rather applauded than be distracted by those who are afraid of their own deeds and the integrity of the council.

Members of the association and the public are again advised to ignore them but rather focus on supporting the state government’s policies that will improve the school rating and performance in the region and beyond.

This continuous battery of the reputation and image of the state institution must stop forthwith or the NEC will be left with no choice but to seek the protection of the courts from further embarrassment from the imposters.

Unicross Alumni Association will not die and you’re all enjoined to support it’s rebuilding for the good of the state and the future of the institution.

Signed.

Engr. Eyo Abia
National Asst. Sec
Unicross Alumni Association.
