Farmers from Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia State have urged the lawmaker representing the constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa to distribute more seedlings and agrochemicals to farmers in his constituency.

The farmers in a letter of appreciation to the lawmaker for distributing improved agricultural seedlings to farmers in the Federal Constituency, said the gesture will boost food security and reduce hunger in the area.

The letter which was signed by Mr. Joseph Okoro (Arochukwu) and Mrs Uzunma Kalu (Ohafia), the farmers appealed to the lawmaker for more improved seedlings for food security, saying: “Like Oliver Twist, we appeal to our performing lawmaker to distribute more improved seedlings in addition to the ones recently distributed to boost agricultural production in Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency.”

The letter said the farmers were witnessing a challenge that requires the prompt attention of the federal and state governments.

“While we appreciate your efforts and that of our performing governor, Dr. Alex Otti, it is pertinent that we inform you that most farmers from your constituency are now relying on Cross River State for farm products and food stuffs. Though, we are proud of Governor Otti’s commitment to the agricultural sector, we urge you not to relent in your interventions for farmers in Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency. We appeal for more improved agricultural seedlings and other high yielding crops for food sufficiency.”

They noted that “if the issues were left unaddressed, the increased burden on us the farmers could lead to food insecurity, severe nutritional deficiencies, high poverty levels, and a further decline in farmers’ already challenging economic situation”.
