Dowen College: 5 Students, 3 Housemasters in Police Custody Over Sylvester Oromoni’s Death

The Lagos State Police Command has detained five students and three housemasters of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, over the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr.

Hakeem Odumosu, the Commissioner of Police in the state, said the students are in their custody to assist in the ongoing investigation into the mysterious death, according to Channels Television.

Odumosu noted that the children will face the wrath of the law if they are found guilty of the accusations.

Oromoni, 12, allegedly died from the injuries sustained while being assaulted by five of his colleagues who wanted to initiate him into cultism.

“I spoke with the mother of the deceased,” the commissioner said.”I got them invited, so once they come now, we will be able to get the full facts of the case. The school has told us their own version of the case, and the parents too. We will get their own version of the story.”

However, legal experts contacted by FIJ said the children can be prosecuted in line with the juvenile law if the outcome of the police investigation does not favour them.

“A crime has occurred; it has led to the death of someone,” Ridwan Oke, a human rights lawyer, told FIJ. “It is murder. We call it culpable homicide, but it is murder.”
