Patrick Eholor vs FG: ECOWAS Court fixes July 9 for hearing on suit against Twitter ban

The ECOWAS Court has announced July 9 as the date for the hearing of the coalition of applications against the Twitter Ban instituted by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The ECOWAS Court stated this in a virtual court sitting held via zoom on Tuesday.

The application by One Love Foundation filed by its President, Chief Patrick Eholor is challenging the legality of the ban.

Before now, the federal government of Nigeria, has by a motion on notice dated 5th July, 2021, filed at ECOWAS Court seeking from the ECOWAS Court, leave to joined all pending suit Twitter ban as just one single suit, with same reliefs and same issues, as they are all similar in nature.

The lawyer representing Chief Patrick Eholor of One Love Foundation, Barr. Samuel Ihensekhien Jnr stated that by this application of the federal government, it shows that there exist a trite/solid cause of action against the federal government and reiterated the position of One Love Foundation once again that usage of Twitter is in tandem with freedom of information and speech in consonance with different ECOWAS treaty’s and law.

He further said that by this case, the dangerous trend and threat to gag press and social media in Nigeria, will be put to halt, as the ban/suspension of any kind on Twitter and Facebook is an impediment of universal doctrine of free speech and information, which can never stand in the face of any law. He sought for the understanding, support ,and unity of every Twitter user in other to make Nigeria state adhere to the reason and doctrine for respect for basic fundamental human rights.
