Unknown gunmen Sunday evening attacked B Division of the police divisional station and the Independent National Electoral Commission in Akwa, Anambra.

It was gathered that the armed attackers came in three Hilux trucks at about 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

A witness who almost ran into the troubled area located between the popular Ekwueme Square in Awka said the gunmen shot into the air close to one hour at the station before proceeding to the INEC office.

According to the witness, before proceeding to INEC, the gunmen drove to Aroma junction. They shot in the air for about 10 minutes, making residents scamper for safety before they headed down to INEC.

Though the source said he could not speak on causality figure, it added that there was the likelihood of damage at both institutions and that the gunmen might have killed people.

“I saw flames of fire going up from the police station and INEC offices. But I cannot say whether people were killed or not because I did not go closer,” said the source.

When contacted, Nkwachukwu Orji, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Anambra, disclosed that he had received information on the attack but could not officially comment on the matter.

“I need to get a clear picture of what happened in my office before I can speak”, he said.

In the same vein, the police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga explained that he was still making contacts to understand the situation clearly.
