The Deputy Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu, has cried out over the deplorable state of Nmuri Bridge in Ebem Ohafia.

The lawmaker, in a matter of urgent public importance, titled: ‘SAVE OUR SOUL: THE DEADLY AND UNSAFE CONDITION OF NMURI BRIDGE AND THE URGENT NEED FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION’, the Deputy Speaker noted that due to climate change and its adverse effects, Nmuri River is now in a state of collapse if nothing is urgently done to save it.

He regretted the pains and hardship the state of the bridge has caused his constituents.

He further stated that he had made series of calls, including a matter of urgent public importance which was presented to the house on the same subject matter and yet to receive any attention up to date.

Continuing, Rt. Hon. Uchendu stated that despite the extremely deplorable and deadly nature of the bridge, commuters and road users who do not have other alternatives still resort to the bridge.

He concluded by saying, “it is against this backdrop that the entire Ohafia South State Constituency sent this save-our-soul appeal to both the state and Federal Government to come to our aid” and prayed the house to mandate the commissioner of works to visit the bridge with a view to carrying out remedial work on it.

The house in her resolution granted the prayers of the Deputy Speaker while calling on the Federal Law Makers representing Ohafia at the National Assembly to step in too for the immediate reconstruction of the bridge.

The Nmuri Bridge is a metal bridge that connects Ohafia Local Government Area to Arochukwu, Bende and the rest of the state through Abam axis.

The Bridge which has been in use for almost fifty years also serves as a trade link, contributing to the socioeconomic development of the people of Ohafia and Arochukwu Local Government Area.
