Some governors in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have begun moves to lobby for a former president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and an ex-governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to emerge as the next national chairman of the party. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to remain in the Peoples Democratic Party and not join the All Progressives Congress. According to the governor, the PDP is a better political platform for the ex-President to run for the 2023 Presidency if he chooses to. Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has zoned the position of the national chairman of the party to the north. The Chairman of the party’s Zoning Committee and Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, made the announcement on Thursday after the meeting of the committee in Enugu. Mr Ugwuanyi said other positions within the National Working Committee (NWC) will be swapped between the north and the south. The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Obiora Agbasimelo, has been declared missing. The candidate’s disappearance has fuelled speculations that he has been kidnapped. The emergence of Agbasimelo as LP’s governorship candidate in the November 6 governorship election in Anambra followed the crisis in the party. The crisis threw up a faction in the LP while one of the leading aspirants at the beginning of the governorship race, Nnamdi Nnoruka, was allegedly kidnapped by unknown persons and forced to withdraw from the contest. The state police command has not issued an official statement on the matter.

The Peoples Democratic Party may zone its national chairmanship position to the South-West. The recommendation to zone the position to the South-West was contained in a leaked working document prepared by the party’s 44-member National Convention Committee on Zoning. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has rescheduled state congresses by two weeks. The exercise which was initially scheduled for October 2, 2021, has now been moved to October 16, 2021. On Wednesday, Secretary of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Sen John James Akpanudoedehe, said an updated timetable/schedule of activities and guidelines for the conduct of the State Congresses would be released to the public in due course.
