The Social Welfare Service Bill, 2022, aimed at reducing extreme poverty in Nigeria has scaled first reading at the Senate. The bill entitled “Social Welfare Service Bill, 2022 was sponsored by Senate Chief Whip, Orji Kalu(APC- Abia) at Tuesday’s plenary. The bill sought to establish a department domiciled in the Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development towards reducing acute poverty in the country. It also sought to establish a welfare service department in all the offices of the Ministry, across the 36 states of the country as well as the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.  

The senate has passed a bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Peace Corps. The bill passed third reading after Sadiq Umar, chairman of the senate committee on interior, presented a report. The bill is being sponsored by Ali Ndume, senator representing Borno north. While presenting the report on the floor of the senate on Tuesday, Umar said his committee received “hundreds of memoranda” from stakeholders who are supporting the passage of the legislation. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of three new polytechnics in various parts of the country. A statement issued on Tuesday by, the director of Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, said the new institutions will be located in Kano, Abia and Delta states. “In line with his determination to make tertiary education more accessible, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) has approved the establishment of three New Federal Polytechnics in the country,” Goong said in the statement. “The polytechnics are to be sited in Umunnoechi in Abia State, Orogun in Delta State and Kabo in Kano State.” According…

Abdullahi Adamu, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has resigned from the senate. Adamu was elected as APC national chairman at the convention of the party that was held on March 26. Abubakar Kyari, the current APC deputy chairman (north), also resigned his membership of the upper legislative chamber. Until his resignation he represented Borno north.
