After Openly Endorsing Gov Otti, Abia PDP Sacks Oko Chukwu, Others From Party Platforms
The Abia State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has removed former Deputy Governor, Sir Oko Chukwu, and several other chieftains from its official platforms following their open endorsement of Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party.
THE WHISPERER learnt that the action was taken hours after Mr Oko Chukwu visited Governor Otti and pledged support for his re-election bid in 2027. During the visit, he reportedly hinted at plans to defect to the Labour Party.
Mr Oko Chukwu, who served as Deputy Governor under Okezie Ikpeazu from 2015 to 2023, has been a prominent figure in the PDP. His latest political moves are being viewed within the party as anti-party activity.
A PDP chieftain from Ohafia LGA, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the development, saying the former Deputy Governor’s public alignment with Governor Otti left the party with no option but to act.
“He is openly supporting Governor Otti and consulting with Labour Party stakeholders. That’s a clear violation of PDP principles, and the party had to respond firmly,” the source said.
Others removed from PDP platforms alongside Oko Chukwu include Obike Mascot Imo (Bende), Barr. Olughu O. Kalu (Ohafia), Obinna Ekekwe (Isuikwuato), Fabian Nwankwo (Umunneochi), and John Okoro (Arochukwu).
Sources say Oko Chukwu is positioning himself to contest the Abia North Senatorial seat in 2027 under the Labour Party. However, he may face stiff opposition.
“Yes, he’s eyeing the Senate seat. But he won’t have it easy. Engr Obinna Agwu Odum, the Director-General of GODA, is already consulting with stakeholders about the same position. There are also other strong contenders like Chief David Ogba Onuoha (Bourdex) and Chief Emeka Kalu,” the source added.
