...Insists Anambra’s 250 erosion sites should not be viewed as tourist sites, but threat that must be defeated

Leading Governorship aspirant under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Engr Chris Emeka Azubogu, says the erosion menace in Anambra State is worrisome, noting that the State’s 250 erosion sites should not be viewed as tourist sites, but threats that must be defeated.

Engr. Azubogu made the statement while on a private visit to Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the State on Friday, lamenting that with its enviable position as one of the Anambra communities housing huge commercial, industrial and residential clusters, it is being threatened by erosion.

According to Azubogu, “it is worrisome that while our population is growing in Anambra State with land space of 4,865 square kilometers, erosion menace is also growing and taking a chunk of this limited land. We can not resign to fate or view these erosion sites as tourist destinations where people only go for site seeing and take pictures. As a Governor of Anambra State by God’s grace, Anambra State will put mechanism and start recovering our land from erosion. We must also develop rules that will guide us from certain behaviours that have negative consequences on our environment.”

Azubogu further stated that “the first line of defence against erosion menace in Anambra State should be the people and community leaders who should take the necessary preventive measures serious.

“Our people and community leaders must lead the ‘war’ in preventing new erosion menace. Anambra State government should also take seriously the issue of environmental impact assessment of every construction activity in the State, bearing in mind that we have to protect our land from erosion.”
