MC Tagwaye Leaves APC, Joins SDP, Cites Lack of Reward System for Loyal Members
Renowned entertainer, businessman, politician, and youth leader Obinna Simon, popularly known as MC Tagwaye, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
His decision was made public through a personally signed press statement, which was released to journalists on Friday in Abuja.
In a dramatic revelation, MC Tagwaye detailed the reasons behind his departure from the APC, citing a loss of confidence in the party’s commitment to its founding principles. After months of introspection and consultations, the entertainer-turned-politician concluded that the APC had strayed too far from its original ideals, leaving him with no choice but to part ways.
Reasons for Defection
Among the reasons for his defection, MC Tagwaye pointed to:
• Lack of a reward system for loyal party members.
• A gerontocratic leadership structure that sidelines young and dynamic voices.
• Policies that perpetuate hardship on low-income earners.
• Compromised internal democracy, where a few power brokers dictate the party’s direction and disregard the voices of the majority.
In contrast, he expressed admiration for the SDP’s commitment to youth empowerment, internal democracy, transparency, and accountability. He praised the party’s vision for a “New Nigeria”, where citizens’ welfare and progress take priority, saying it deeply resonates with him.
Official Resignation
“I have formally submitted my resignation to my APC ward chairman, marking the end of my association with the party. I am excited to join the SDP and contribute to its mission of building a better Nigeria for all,” Tagwaye stated.
He also urged fellow Nigerians who share his vision to join him, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to build a brighter future.
“I urge all Nigerians who share my vision to join me on this journey. Together, we can create a better future for ourselves, our children, and our great nation,” he added.
A Prominent Figure in Tinubu’s Presidential Campaign
MC Tagwaye was a key figure in the last presidential election, serving as a vital member of the Tinubu/Shettima campaign team. His expertise in entertainment, grassroots mobilization, and political strategy played a significant role in promoting the candidacy of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
