Ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election in Abia State, a group under the aegis of Old Bende Vanguard for Good Governance has called on the former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Chief Henry Ikechukwu Ikoh, to contest for the governorship position, citing his proven ability to deliver good governance.

This development aligns with the increasing calls for Chief Ikoh to enter the race. A civil society organization, Abia-17, has also been advocating for his candidacy, emphasising the urgent need for credible leadership in Abia State.

Adding their voice to the growing movement, the Old Bende Vanguard for Good Governance highlighted Chief Ikoh’s outstanding antecedents and track record during his tenure as a minister. According to the group, his developmental initiatives and philanthropic contributions to his community and Abia State at large have earned him widespread admiration and trust.

Speaking on behalf of the group, its Chairman, Hon. Ukaegbu Kanu, and Secretary, Dr. Mrs. Vivian Njikoye, noted that Chief Ikoh’s political ambitions are no surprise, as he has always been a potential candidate for various positions. They emphasised, however, that the time has come for him to focus on the governorship role, pledging the group’s full support for his candidacy.

“With this recent endorsement from our group, as well as other notable voices rallying behind him, Chief Ikoh stands on solid ground should he decide to run for governor,” the group stated.

“This momentum will give his campaign a good boost as the political field becomes increasingly favorable to him.

“Chief Ikoh’s political pedigree is undeniable. Having previously served as Commissioner for Industry in Abia State and as Honourable Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he is currently the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri. His extensive experience and proven leadership qualities make him a strong contender for the governorship position in 2027.”
