Former Abia State Governor and current Senator for Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has declared his qualification to run for president in 2027, adding that he would only contest if President Bola Tinubu does not seek a second term.

Kalu made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday evening.

“Let me tell you, first and foremost, I’m qualified to be president, and I’m competent. We already have a candidate in our party, but if he doesn’t run and the party gives me the chance, it would be a privilege. It’s not just about my desire; it’s about the opportunity the party provides. As for 2027, my current interest is to return to the Senate, continue as a lawmaker, and work in that capacity,” he said.

Addressing the current economic difficulties in Nigeria, Kalu explained that the root of the country’s issues lies in the absence of a structured economic system and organised economy, stressing the need for the government to reduce its spending.

He acknowledged President Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen institutions but noted that while the president’s decisions could be right or wrong, they were necessary steps toward progress.

“There’s a global deflation happening everywhere, but it’s worse in Nigeria because we have no economic processes. We haven’t had a proper economy for 60 years. There’s no organised structure—no stable power supply, and our stock exchange is still developing. The institutions driving the economy are weak, and President Bola Tinubu is working to rebuild and strengthen them.

“If we continue with handouts and a weak economy, we won’t move forward. Tough decisions need to be made, and whether the president is right or wrong, he is making these decisions for the future. Are Nigerians suffering? Yes, they are. But our situation looks worse because we failed to act earlier,” Kalu explained.

He further argued that government officials should adopt austerity measures, suggesting the need for a reduction in government spending.

“I believe people in government should live within our means. We need to scale back on unnecessary expenditures, reduce the gifts we give to other countries, and cut down on excesses in governance,” Kalu added.

Kalu also revealed that President Tinubu is fully aware of the hardship Nigerians face, often moving around Abuja at night to observe the situation firsthand.

“The President knows Nigerians are suffering, and he knows they are hungry. He is familiar with the streets and sometimes drives around the city to see what’s happening. He’s not a president who stays locked up in a room. Despite the risks, he moves around to stay connected with the realities on the ground,” Kalu said.
