The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), has expressed frustration over the repeated vandalism of critical power installations in Ohafia, and Arochukwu Local Government Areas of Abia State.
“Just a week after replacing the vandalised 3-span electrical infrastructure, another sabotage attempt has been reported,”an official of EEDC said in a video obtained by The Whisperer on Thursday.
To combat this menace, the EEDC has directed its Operation and Maintenance Squad (OMS) to engage with local scrap yards and educate them on the risks of purchasing stolen electrical materials and cables. This move aims to disrupt the supply chain of stolen infrastructure and prevent further vandalism.
The company called on stakeholders in Ohafia and Arochukwu to take action against scrap buyers and sellers in their regions, who are suspected to be complicit in these acts of vandalism.
“Regrettably, just a week after replacing the vandalized 3-span electrical infrastructure, we’re facing another sabotage attempt. To combat this, I’ve instructed our Operation and Maintenance Squad (OMS) to engage with local scrap yards in their areas and educate them on the risks of purchasing stolen electrical materials and cables.
“Furthermore, I urge stakeholders in Ohafia and Arochukwu to address the issue of scrap buyers and sellers in their regions, as they are suspected to be complicit in these acts of vandalism.”
This incident is not isolated, as Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure has suffered several attacks by vandals in the past. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has previously lamented the destruction of its transmission towers, highlighting the need for collective action to protect the country’s power infrastructure [1).
As the EEDC works to restore power and prevent future incidents in Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, the company urges the public to report any suspicious activities or information regarding vandalism to the authorities.
Last month, the member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, Chief Ibe Okwara Osonwa, expressed great concern over the vandalism of the B—phase spans near the Mortuary at Amaekpu 132 Power House in Ohafia Local Government Area.
The lawmaker condemned the act of sabotage, emphasising the need for unity against elements threatening the community’s progress and development.
“The vandalism of our power line is a clear indication that we are facing adversaries who seek to disrupt our power supply and overall advancement,” Hon. Osonwa stated in a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday afternoon.
“It is imperative that we come together to identify and report those responsible for these acts.”
The lawmaker urged residents of Ohafia LGA to take a stand against vandalism and work collaboratively to protect their resources, ensuring a safer and more sustainable environment for everyone.
