The plot to impeach the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu, has thickened, THE WHISPERER has learnt.
It was gathered that some lawmakers had been mobilised to carry out an impeachment proceeding against Uchendu who according to them has performed woefully.
According to News Gazette Online, the lawmakers regrouped at a hotel in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital to perfect the impeachment of the Deputy Speaker.
Some of the lawmakers were also said to be against the move to remove the Deputy Speaker, whom they described as a good fellow, and had vowed to stand against any motion to actualise the plot.
THE WHISPERER had reported that the Abia House of Assembly was adjourned indefinitely as the Deputy Speaker, Ifeanyi Uchendu and the Majority Leader, Solomon Akpulonu, narrowly escaped being impeached.
The Deputy Majority Leader, Paul Taribo (PDP–Ukwa East) moved the motion for the removal of the two principal officers.
The Minority Leader, Chijioke Chukwu, (APC—Bende South) supported the motion.
The development caused commotion and delayed proceeding as shouts of ‘order’ by the Speaker, Chinedum Orji, was ignored.
The speaker demanded reasons for their removal and evidence of the allegation but none was given.
Mr Taribo, who moved the motion, insisted: “I’m saying that these two officers should be relieved of their duties”.
Obinna Ichitta (APGA—Aba South) declared support for the motion.
“I’m so happy that my colleagues have spoken the way they did and I support everything they said,” Mr Ichitta said.
Some members demanded that the motion be subjected to a voice vote but the speaker adjourned the sitting.
THE WHISPERER reports that Ifeanyi Uchendu is the member representing Ohafia South State Constituency. He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
THE WHISPERER could not confirm if the attempt to Impeach him is related to his declaration to contest the Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency seat in 2023.
