Terrorists, often referred to as bandits, have burnt at least 37 people alive in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The travellers, who were trying to migrate to other parts of the country due to insecurity in their communities, were stopped by the terrorists some six kilometers away from the Sabon Birni town.
Witnesses told the BBC Hausa Service that the incident occurred at 9am on Monday.
“The tragic incident occurred at Gidan Bawa, about 6km from Sabon Birni, where they started the journey.
The witnesses said the remains of the victims have been buried in a mass grave.
“Among the victims, there was my uncle and his four children. When we arrived at the scene, we found that they were dead. We counted 25 charred bodies,” said the witness.
Another witness said among the 45 travellers, only seven survived, adding that they were currently battling for survival at the hospital.
Police are yet to speak on the incident.
