Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and 2023 Abia State governorship aspirant, Etigwe Uwa, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), citing the party’s loss of focus and its failure to evolve into a truly national platform.

In a resignation letter dated 20th August 2025 and addressed to the Ward Chairman of APGA in Ohafor Ward, Asaga Ohafia, Uwa declared that he could no longer continue in what he described as a “narrow-focused myopic contraption.”

He expressed dismay that APGA, which once embodied a vibrant political spirit symbolised by the Cock, had degenerated into a one-state party.

“The conduct of some of the officials of the party in the past effectively turned the party into a ticket merchandising bazaar of sorts. This explains why the party has been Anambra-centric rather than regional and/or national in its outlook,” he wrote. “The leadership of the party has been domiciled in one State for 18 years and with the current trend may remain so domiciled for 24 years.”

The prominent lawyer lamented that APGA had lost the positive symbolism of the Cock, which once represented “promptness, alertness, initiative, industry, productivity and glory.” Instead, he said, the party had fallen “into deep slumber and apostasy,” failing in its duty to wake Nigerians to a new dawn.

He further noted: “The Spirit of APGA, as it was when it was conceived and founded by Chekwas Okorie and given vitality by Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu, has left the party.”

Uwa, who sought to govern Abia State on the platform of APGA in the 2023 elections, affirmed that his political journey would continue, guided by his vision of contributing to the building of “an enviable Nigeria which would be the pride of all Nigerians.”

“I leave APGA with the prayer that someday the participants whose conduct have led to the exodus of the wholesome spirit that once reigned in APGA would have a change of heart so that the Spirit of APGA can return,” he prayed.

The Senior Advocate requested that his name be deleted from the APGA membership register and removed from all party platforms. Copies of his resignation letter were also sent to the National Chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, and APGA’s National Chairman, Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa.
