Deliver Your Units: Abia Govt Slams Ikpeazu Over Unlawful Political Campaigns

The Abia State Government has condemned what it describes as an illegal political campaign by former Governor Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, calling his recent political activities a violation of electoral regulations and a potential threat to public order.

In a statement signed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the government expressed concern over a recent political meeting convened by Dr. Ikpeazu at his Umuobiakwa residence in Obingwa Local Government Area.

The gathering, which included his former aides, political associates, and supporters, was described as “politically charged” and a breach of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.

Although the former governor did not formally declare any political ambition, the government noted that his directive to supporters to “deliver their booths and units” in upcoming elections was tantamount to launching a political campaign, which is currently prohibited under Nigeria’s electoral laws.

“He went further to make a veiled comment about his expertise in election rigging, forgetting that it failed him in the 2023 Senatorial race where he placed a distant third,” the statement added.

While affirming Dr. Ikpeazu’s constitutional right to free speech and association, the Otti-led administration insisted that such rights must be exercised within the confines of the law. It decried the former governor’s conduct as “unbecoming” and warned of its capacity to destabilise the state’s peace.

“It is preposterous that Dr. Ikpeazu chose to exploit this illegal platform not only to mobilise politically but also to launch a vicious tirade of misinformation and attacks against the current administration,” the government said, warning that such actions would not be tolerated.

Governor Alex Otti’s administration, the statement noted, remains committed to rebuilding the state, restoring public trust, and delivering good governance. It urged Abians to ignore the distractions and remain focused on supporting ongoing development efforts.

The government also warned that any political activity in defiance of INEC regulations would be met with legal action, stressing that the ban on political campaigns remains in place.

“We want to issue a final warning that the ban on campaigns has not been lifted and anyone campaigning now is breaking the law and trying to heat up the polity. Government will not sit idly by and allow that to happen,” the release stated.

While calling on citizens to remain calm and law-abiding, the government reaffirmed its commitment to peace, security, and lawful governance in Abia State.
