Abia State Governor Alex Otti, his Deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, have all lost their various local government areas at Saturday’s council elections in the state.
Unknown Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) emerged victorious in the Abia State local government elections, winning in 15 out of the 17 local government areas in Abia State, with the Young Progressives Party (YPP) claiming the remaining two local government areas, Osisioma Ngwa and Ugwunagbo.
The Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, Professor Chima George, who announced the results on Saturday, congratulated both the winners and the losers, saying, “In an election, there must be a winner and a loser. Thank God that Abia has been peaceful, and I want them to maintain that peace and harmony that has been existing in our district,” The Whistler quoted him.
The election results show a strong performance by the Zenith Labour Party in Abia State. In Ohafia LGA, ZLP’s Eleanya Kalu scored 30,223 votes to defeat the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) who scored 8, 064 votes to emerge second. In Obingwa LGA, ZLP’s Maxwell Nwadike won with 33,667 votes, far ahead of other parties such as APGA, LP, PDP, and YPP. In Ukwa East, ZLP’s Chibunna Akara also secured a clear win with 30,941 votes.
In Isialangwa South, ZLP’s Nnadozie Nwogwugwu scored 17,091 votes out of 37,603 votes. In Aba North LGA, ZLP candidate Timothy Iheke won, while Anyanwu Obialor was victorious in Aba South. Pastor Dike Nwankwo of ZLP claimed victory in Ukwa West LGA. In Ugwunagbo LGA, YPP’s Iheanacho Chiemela Nwagbara emerged as the winner, marking one of YPP’s only two wins in the state.
In Umuahia North, ZLP’s Smart Iheoma won by a large margin, securing 41,803 votes. Similarly, in Umuahia South, ZLP candidate Chinedu Enwereizo won with 20,973 votes. Osisioma Ngwa was the other LGA won by YPP, with their candidate Chidi Chris Agu taking the lead with 29,088 votes.
Other ZLP winners include Chinedum Ekeke, who won the chairmanship in Isiukwuato LGA, highlighting ZLP’s strong influence across Abia State with 15 wins out of the 17 local government areas.
Professor Chima George, Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), in his closing remarks, expressed gratitude to the security agencies, political party chairmen, the media, and everyone whose efforts contributed to the smooth, peaceful, and successful conduct of the election.

While Governor Otti is from Isialangwa South LGA of Abia Central Senatorial District, his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu is from Ohafia LGA (Abia North), and the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa represents Aba South State Constituency (Abia South Senatorial District).
