The lawmaker representing Imo East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Ezenwa Onyewuchi has dumped the Labour Party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Majority Leader at the Senate, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, announced Onyewuchi’s defection at plenary on Tuesday.

Onyewuchi defected to the ruling party under the presence of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma who was present in the Hallowed Chambers after he was granted entry in line with the Senate rules.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Onyewuchi’s letter of defection which he addressed to the APC.

In his letter, Onyewuchi said that he has resigned from the Labour party citing the unsolvable crisis in his former Party, he also said that his defection is in line with the constitution.

He also noted that his defection is to contribute to the development initiatives of President Tinubu.

Shortly after Onyewuchi was ushered to take his seat at the Majority party section of the Senate Chambers, he was also welcomed by APC lawmakers.

The implication of the Lawmaker’s defection means that all three Senators of Imo are now members of the APC controlled state.

The other Senators are Osita Izunaso (Imo West) and Patrick Ndubueze ( Imo North).

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi winner of the Imo East senatorial election in the 2023 National Assembly elections.

Onyewuchi polled 100,631 votes to defeat Chief Uche Onyeagucha of the Peoples Democratic Party who got 87,229 votes.

Onyewuchi, had lost the PDP ticket to Onyeagucha during the primaries before he headed for the Labour Party.
