Students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Cross River State, have taken to the streets to protest the recent hike in school fees for the new session.
The students, who assembled at the entrance gate of the university chanted protest songs in video clips shared on social media and obtained by The Whisperer.
They also carried placards with several inscriptions like; “Let the Poor Breathe”, “Degree, not Debt” and “Fees Must Fall”.

The school had in a new fee schedule, released last week, increased fees payable by students by up to 200 per cent, a development that has become an established trend among Nigerian public universities.
Breakdown of UNICAL Increased School Fee:
1. MBBS, Law Dentistry, Nursing Science, Pharmacy, Medical Lab., and Engineering;
New Students: N193,000
Returning Students: N147,000
Final Year Students: N169,500
2. Science Courses with exception of the above listed;
New Students: N157,000
Returning Students: N120,500
Final Year Students: N143,000
3. Non-Science Courses with exception of the above listed;
New Students: N149,500
Returning Students: N113,000
Final Year Students: N135,500
