Eholor calls for immediate release of Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu

Social crusader and president of One Love Foundation, Chief Patrick Osagie Eholor, has condemned the arrest of Nollywood veteran, Chiwetalu Agu by the Department of State Services, DSS.

Eholor said the arrest of Agu by the secret police was an indication of how the Nigerian security agents are running the country without following due process and rule of law.

The Nigerian Army had arrested the Nollywood actor for donning a Biafra regalia in Onitsha Anambra State.

Agu was arrested on Thursday in Upper Iweka Bridge by soldiers while carrying out a charity exercise.

He was, however, released by the Nigerian Army, and shortly afterwards, re-arrested by DSS operatives on Friday.

Reacting to the development, Eholor called for the immediate and unconditional release of the 65-years-old actor.

He charged the military to apologise to Agu for violating his fundamental human rights.

In a statement he issued on Friday, Eholor said: “The arrest of Chiwetalu Agu is not only embarrassing but it is a confirmation of the lawless behavior of our security operatives doing things without due process and rule of law. If I may ask, what offence has Agu committed to warrant being subjected to such humiliation, torture, inhumane treatment and degradation by those who knows little or nothing about our laws?

“His arrest is against his fundamental human rights. It is a shame that we are treating a veteran in the Nollywood industry the way we are going about it. It is shameful! I am calling for his unconditional release and compensation for the trauma he has passed through in the cause of this inhumane treatment.

“Nigeria is not a banana republic, therefore, our security operatives must play by the rules. It is high time we follow due process and stop ridiculing the image of the nation before others,” he said.
