Erosion Menace in Ohafia: Abia Deputy Speaker Moves for Urgent Government Action

The Deputy Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly and member representing Ohafia South State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu today at the floor of the house raised a matter of urgent public importance on the “Devastating Gully Erosion Sites in Ohafia South State Constituency, The Non Inclusion of Same in the Priority list of Abia NEWMAP and A Call for Urgent Government Action”.

In his motion the Deputy Speaker argued that the World Bank Assisted state-led Project which became effective in 2013 but Abia NEWMAP has not executed a single erosion remediation work in Ohafia South State Constituency without recourse to the number of active gully erosions ravaging many communities in Ohafia.

Continuing, Rt. Hon. Uchendu noted that the gully erosion sites which poses devastating threat to many lives, properties and essential infrastructure includes the gullies that have developed along the corridors of Amaekpu-Elu Oyirinmba road, Elu-Ebem court road, Bakassi in Amaekpu, Water works road at Elu and Ndi Uduma Awoke.

Concluding, the Deputy Speaker revealed that the aforementioned gully erosion sites are very serious, a few of them claiming properties worth millions of naira while some are on the verge of submerging nearby residential buildings.

He prayed the house to mandate the leadership of Abia NEWMAP and the Technical Committee to visit the erosion sites for an on-the-spot assessment and subsequent inclusion of the same in the priority list for urgent action.

Other members of the house also spoke in favour of the motion with the house granting the prayers of the Deputy Speaker as contained in his motion.
